Intro

A Manually Operated Centrifuge

To design a manually operated centrifuge based off of the common salad spinner for international CDC labs where there is no stable electricity. As seen on 2017 Core 77 Open Design Award and Dubai Design Week.

Role: Product Designer, UX Researcher, Mechnical Engineer

STEP 1

Place salad spinner handle through 3D printed base unit

STEP 2

Attach universal adapter to interior of the lid

STEP 3

Attach custom printed tube or well plate holder

STEP 4

Insert tubes or well plates

STEP 5

Place the domed lid onto the unit and pull the cord to spin

Features

Universal Fit

Different sizes tubes are used for specific purpose. A universal adapter is designed to fit all these tubes.

By placing the specific adapter, you are able to insert different tubes.

Preliminary Research

To determine which salad spinner to use, multiple salad spinners are evaluated according to key factors.

Prototyping

Design Ideation | Concept Evaluation

We selected Zyliss's spinner to develop 3 concepts. Then based on the input from stakeholders, evaluation matrix is utilized to choose the final solution

Left: Lid Reconfiguration

Judged to be unsafe and fragile.

Middle: Mesh Insert

Not easy to clean.

Right: Central Insert

The final solution, proved to be safe and easy to use.
